Hanal Pixán: When Souls Come Home

While the Día de Muertos is celebrated across Mexico, in Yucatán it takes on a special name and essence: Hanal Pixán, which in Mayan means “Food for the Souls.”

It is not a day of sadness, but of remembrance and gratitude. Families prepare altars filled with flowers, candles, and traditional foods to welcome the spirits of loved ones who visit once a year.

For the people in the south, it represents the union of heaven, earth, and the underworld, a sacred time when love transcends time and presence returns through memory.

An Altar Filled with Light, Stories, and Love

At Hotel Sureño, we create a traditional altar every year to celebrate Hanal Pixán, as a gesture of respect for Yucatán’s cultural heritage.

During these days, the altar becomes a serene space where guests from all over the world can pause, reflect, and honor the beauty of remembrance.

We warmly invite you to share a photo of a loved one who has passed away. With your consent, their image will be included in our altar, a place of light, care, and collective memory.

(Participation is completely voluntary and meant as a respectful cultural experience.)
